SYNOPSIS
Ladies Day is a comedy drama about four very different Northern ladies who work in a fish factory in Hull. It’s funny, heart-warming and poignant.  The story of 4 friends with very different lives & aspirations but who look out for one another…
To celebrate Pearl’s pending retirement (so they think), they ditch their overalls and dress up to the nines for a day at the races when Royal Ascot relocates to York.
A lucky find gets them free entry into a completely different world. Out for a drink, a flirt and a flutter, chance meetings change everything and each one reveals more about themselves as the day’s events unfold. Their friendships are tested but stay strong, even when their luck runs out and fortune is tossed to the wind…. Or is it?
All parts provide an opportunity for great characterisation.

CHARACTERS

All the ladies are from Hull ie northerners.

PEARL : stage age 50s/early 60s
Pearl is about to retire.
Kind & generous.  Caring.  Strong.  Married with 4 children and 1 grandson.
Slightly better off than the other 3, and with slightly better taste!
Has a secret.

JAN : stage age mid 40s
Single mum; completely devoted to her teenage daughter.
Slightly dowdy, saving every penny for her daughter who is going to uni.
Bit prim, but hiding a secret passion.
Gets completely trolleyed at the races (very out of character!)

SHELLEY : stage age mid 20s.
Single, gobby, brash, drinks too much.
Pretty in a slightly cheap & tarty way.
She’s a wannabe, good-time girl who’s looking for a millionaire to look after her and “take her away from her boring life”

LINDA : stage age mid 20s
Also single, brought up by her nan.
Tony Christie fan.
Naïve, sweet, bit old-fashioned, quiet & thoughtful.  Dresses conservatively
Total opposite to Shelley!  But also dreaming of a different life…

MAN 1 : stage age late 40s-60s
to play JOE, FRED, KEVIN & BARRY

JOE : stage age 40s – 60s.  Factory supervisor.  Also from Hull ie northerner.
Very kind, a bit lonely.  Dreaming of a new life in Australia but really just wants to find someone to love and be happy.

FRED : any age.  Ticket tout.  Likely to be local ie northerner but not necessarily.
Dodgy; seasoned salesman.

KEVIN : stage age : any.  Addicted gambler.  Could be from anywhere.  Has lost everything but hasn’t told his wife…..

BARRY :  stage age late 50s/60s.  Bookie.  Could be from anywhere.
Charming, helpful, kind.  Not what he seems.

MAN 2 : stage age early – mid 30s
to play JIM & PATRICK

JIM : stage age late 30s – 50s.  TV racing pundit.  Any accent but probably posh-ish.
Bit smarmy, with huge ego and an eye for the ladies…covering Ascot for Channel 4.

PATRICK : stage age late 20s/late 30s.  Jockey.  Irish.
Disgruntled.  Lonely but kind. Waiting for just one more big win.  Always starving!
